Jobs and Education

About 120 people lose their jobs every day in Pennsylvania. Bush and the other self-described Free Traders of the world say these people can get training for their next jobs, which are always just around the corner. Tech jobs, they say. In the meantime "white collar" technology workers are losing their jobs too. It must be something with the workers, right? Because Bush and the Free Traders say we're in a recovery, it's just a jobless recovery. Friends, it's not a recovery if it's jobless. The jobs are somewhere else. Anywhere but here.

With those jobs go the disposable income. With that income goes home ownership, because how can you pay a mortgage you took on at $40,000 a year when you now work at Wal-Mart? With the income go the taxes, including the taxes that fund our schools. Then our schools get even further out of reach than they are now. How can the Governor fix our schools if he has no money to work with? The country is setting him up for failure, and slot machines will help but it's just a band-aid. We need jobs. Economic development zones will sit empty if we don't address the trade issue.

Pennsylvanians deserve the Governor's ideas and leadership on Education. It's bad enough to have the completely unfunded Leave No Child Behind Act. What's worse is our state's obstinate reps in the State House and Senate who are blocking the Gov from making any progress. In the meantime our kids continue to grow up in a flawed Educational system, greatly weakened by lower state revenue and questionable testing practices. Specter and Santorum have done nothing to help, instead voting for huge tax cuts which equate to cuts in funding for Education, Police, Fire, etc. Why? Why can't we elect people who will stand up and do what's right for our country, our state, our neighborhoods?

We can, and we will. This train is rolling, powered by the hopes and dreams of thousands of us willing to take great risks to save our schools, our businesses, our futures, and our democracy. This train can't be stopped, it can only be boarded, and we invite everyone on board. You who power this train understand your importance. It starts with each of us, and we have each other to rely on, we have each other's backs as we fight for our futures and the futures of our kids and grandkids. This is a pivotal time in history, a choice between two paths, and I choose the path of hope, opportunity, justice, equality, and progress. We’ve seen the other path, and it leads nowhere we’d ever want to go. Join us--change the world!

Great article, Mr. Crystle. I agree with you that you need to put the goverment back in the hands of the people, and education is the best way to do that. With Education, people can get jobs, and start rebuilding the economy. Thanks, Sam. We have Big Corporate Democrats just like we have Big Corporate Republicans. This is an American issues, not right or left. Regular people and small businesses don't have a seat at the table.
