On this morning 2 years ago, I was in New York on my way to an appointment when I said hello to the guys at the 33 on Great Jones St., and then stopped for coffee on 4th & Broadway--downtown near SoHo. When I came out I noticed a fire nearby, and I remember thinking to myself that it was a very big fire over at NYU, just 2 blocks away. The World Trade Center was over a mile away. On the following Friday I met an old friend at Union Square. We joined a crowd of about 10,000 people, held candles, sang some appropriate songs. By then we knew what had happened; 11 guys from the 33 never returned, and most of us had lost someone we knew personally. There were no words for the grief we felt for our losses. At that moment we were all a family, hurt but secure in our concern for each other, our love for each other and our country. Today there still are no words for the grief--it has not passed and I don't expect it will. This will always be a hard day. Spend it well.
