Hitchhiker Inspires Me

I left Lancaster late Friday night after Molly Henderson's fundraiser to get to Pittsburgh in time for the steelworkers rally in Hartwood Acres on Saturday. I gassed up at a convenience store and came across a young man looking for a ride. He had a briefcase stuffed with papers (the old briefcase stuffed with papers trick, right?) so I offered him a ride in the campaign van. He was headed to Mount Joy, so it was pretty much on my way to the Turnpike.

On the way I asked him about his life, and he said things were tough. Work was hard to find even though he's a great furniture builder (he showed me photos of his work). There was a lull, then he just started rapping. I caught one of the lines: "My nation needs me to continue to rise". I stopped him and asked him to repeat it. Made my day. I let him off in a neighborhood still suffering from an Isabel blackout and headed on to Pittsburgh, knowing that "My nation needs me to continue to rise."

Rise up!
