I do not live in PA but I think Charlie should keep running. A true democracy is about ideas, not dollars and not party affiliation. Sure affiliations and dollars help but they should not be the core. They have unfortunately become too important and the net result is that we have simple answers for incredibly complex issues. We have loyalty to persons instead of loyalty to ideas. It seems to me that the wonderful thing about no-name charlie is that he represents the rest of us no-name folks with ideas that should be important and should be heard.

I agree with shockintheworldin04 but Joe Hoeffel and his campaign have done nothing but launch vicious personal attacks against Mr. Crystle. I am sure that he (Crystle) would be willing to discuss issues in an open forum with Mr. Hoeffel. However, Crystle has allowed us to know where he stands on the issues and what his campaign is doing, something I have not seen from Joe Hoeffel or anyone on his staff. I appreciate politicians that keep us the public informed and I plan on supporting Charlie Crystle because he is the only candidate that I can see that wants to give me, a regular guy, a seat at the table.

I come from the real world. These are exactly the type of divisive comments that are, one uninteresting, and two, unnecessary. Charlie Crystal to his credit has not launched any personal attacks and wants to talk issues. I commend him and respect that. When i Come on here I want to have interesting, thorough debate. You can come in here and badmouth Charlie, in his own house. Can I do the same to Hoeffel? No, because he doesn't believe in two way communication with actual supporters or potential supporters.

If your vote for Hoeffel is based on the support he garners from the PA Democratic Party, then all the power to you. Knock yourself out. But those guys haven't been able to get behind a winner in a major race in -- how long? You tell me.

You Charlie Crystle supporters are completely delusional. Let's not pretend that there are thousands, or even hundreds, of Charlie Crystle supporters. In truth, there are only a few dozen, and they all post on this blog and on the Politics PA message board.

Your guy's great meetup in Philadelphia was canceled because he couldn't get enough people interested. I think it was 38 people to be exact.

Crystle is a joke to everyone who knows anything about politics, Democrats and Republicans alike. When they are not laughing at him to his face, they are laughing at him behind his back.

Comparing Crystle to Rendell would be hysterical, if it wasn't so pathetic and ridiculous. He is nothing like Rendell. Charlie, how close are you to raising the $43 million that Rendell raised? That is why Rendell was able to win after the primary. How many of Rendell's finance committee members are raising money for Crystle? The answer is zero. How many influential politicians are supporting Crystle? The answer is zero. Hoeffel gets invited to dozens of major political events every week that Crystle doesn't even know exist.

you assume political office is a requirement for developing political skills. It's not. and the economic climate in the 90's was not because of Clinton or free trade, it was largely due to the y2k bug where every company all over the world spent huge amounts of money to solve the problem. Wellstone had no political experience and was one of our best senator's ever. And he did make a difference. he voted for what he bleieved he, and I know charlie would do the same. the vote for the war was a vote for bush's pre-emptive military intervention, an unworkable isolationist doctrine of brute force. hoeffel votedfor the patriot act, too, which is an affront to civil liberties and has had no effect on fighting terror. crystle is on the right side of every issue so far, so I don't care about prior political experience. this time, vote for what you believe in.

What do I say to the hundreds of thousands of Democrats that would rather vote for Crystle? I would say vote for Hoeffel. He has a chance to beat Specter. Let's be honest with each other Sam. In order to win PA you need to be moderate on a lot of issues. Hoeffel, who isn't dumb, realizes this, and votes for the war. Look, it's easy for Charlie to sit on the sidelines and make headlines about that vote, but if he were in the US House he would have voted for it too. And if he didn't, he wouldn't get re-elected.

Hoeffel voted for the free trade agreement. Yeah, did you forget that Bill Clinton was the leading force behind NAFTA? And did you also forget the country had the best economic times in the history of the Union under the Clinton administration?

The fact that Crystle is not a career politician is one of his faults Sam. To be in the Senate, you need to have some political skill to get anything done.

Gopirates I find your response short sighted and presumptous. To begin with lets not throw accusations at each other, i am not a republican nor do i purport to be one. But am i wrong?? you can be as principled in your stands as you would like, I myself am not a fan of big coporations, but can u really believe that without incentives that companies as well as jobs will not leave PA. Look at California, they are stifling the business climate, the co's are relocating to different states where the taxes arent as high and the regulations not as cumbersome. You cant simply tell them to stay, force them, or make a wish have them remain. What are you going to tell the people of PA who have lost 20,000 jobs because you wouldnt compromise your principles?? "it was the right thing to do " Right, i doubt it. Lets be reasonable the Federal Govt at best can close corporate loopholes, increase taxes substantially on offshore corporations, or refuse to give these co's gov't contracts unless they relocate to the states. You can argue with me all day about republicans and democrats. The bottom line is there are other alternaives than to end free trade, how about simply fixing it?? did that enter into your mind? its needs to be FAIR TRADE, not necessarily everything goes trade. As for your other statement, the Governor, yes the Governor has the sole power to establish the business climate in PA, not the US SENATE or Congress. One man in US SENATE sir, is not going to change anything!!! this is isnt the MR. Crystal goes to Washington show on NBC.

In any case, it wasn't the Senate that voted for NAFTA and GATT? Of course not. It was the governor. Got it.

And JoeDemocrat -- the analogy is obviously not exact. But the fact remains -- Democrats like you were crying that the Casey/Rendel primary was dividing the party and would cost us the governorship.

Instead, it made Rendel even stronger. The results speak for themselves.

Again, if Charlie has no name ID, and no experience and none of the crap you talk about, then you have nothing to worry about. It's that simple. Charlie will get 10 percent of the vote and Hoefel will have had some practice heading into the general.

A primary battle is not inherently a bad thing. Unless you are afraid that your guy may not survive.

Incidentally, where is your man Hoeffel's blog? Where are his efforts to foster a real debate with the people of Pennsylvania? Is he still hiding behind press releases?

Sam, lets be honest here for a sec, I have to take issue with your statements about protecting jobs in PA etc...domestic agenda items. What Charlie Crystal does in the senate or anyone else as an individual for that matter has absolutely no impact on the invetible outcome. Consensus will always occur. Charlie Crystal is powerless against jobs leaving PA to go abroad, he may be against it, but is powerless to stop it. As a legislator you have a point of view and you express it. Your one of 100. But dont mislead people into believing Charlie Crystal or Hoeffel have anything to do with jobs leaving PA. Thats just plain wrong. This race is nothing like the Casey/Rendell primary. First of all, Rendell was the executive of the largest city in the state, nevermind being the National Democratic Party Chairman. Secondly, Rendell was able to raise more money than any other candidate in the history of the state. Charlie, has no base, no money (other than his personal wealth, which, if he were smart, he would keep, a big fat zero in the name recognition area, and finally, he was inspired by a hitchiker, which, oh by the way, hitchiking in PA is illegal. I can go on and on about why this race is nothing like Casey/Rendell.

Charlie:

The fact that your supporters think this race is similar to the Gubernatorial primary of 2002 is indicative of why you should get out of the race. You, and your folks, seem to lack the knowledge, the political awareness, and, let's not forget, the support needed to run and win this US Senate seat. Let's stand together in this fight and beat the Republicans. Did I happen to mention the Republicans have a strong majority in the State Senate? I am sure your ideas and plans for the future would be embraced in Harrisburg. While there is nothing in the US Constititution requiring you to run for state office, it is typically a good starting point, and a great way to build the support necessary to run for statewide office.

I'm not fearful of giving the people of PA a choice in the PA Democratic primary. I, along with the rest of Democrats around the state, am fearful of another 6 years of Arlen Specter, and with Democrats out there beating up on our best guy, I'm afraid all of our worst fears will be realized. I had the chance to see Charlie on PCN and I have to say that he has the ideas and the vision to help lead the fight for hardworking Pennsylvanians and Americans like myself in the United States Senate. We need to have an open and positive discourse between the candidates and among their supporters, it is the only way we can move forward as a party. I look forward to seeing many Crystle vs. Hoeffel debates; I think that both candidates have a lot to offer from their divergent viewpoints.

I was also sorry to see Ramirez traded especially since Bobby Hill will be out the rest of the season with back problems...maybe next year?

I agree with GoPirates. I didn't realize the U.S. Constitution required senate candidates to run for state office first.

Speak for yourself. If Ed Rendell had heeded such advice in 2002 he wouldn't be governor today. The party establishment was blathering on about uniting behind Casey.

Seriously, I'm leaning Crystle but I'm willing to give Hoeffel a chance. Ultimately, I want a choice. I want a debate, and I want a party that is willing to open its doors to anyone who genuinely seeks to make a difference.

Why are you so afraid to let Democrats in Pennsylvania have a real choice? Where's the confidence in your guy?

(Now what the hell was Littlefield thinking when he traded Ramirez?)

Charlie,

I'm not really sure why we should be making contributions to YOUR campaign. I think it would be productive for the Democratic party, along with the progressives of the state to be concetrating their resources on a candidate with REAL support and a real base. While I think your efforts are admirable, I also think there may be another time for you to get involved politically-or not another time, but at a different level. Democrats and Pennsylvanians need someone with real experience at the Federal level and someone who has a legitimate chance of beating either Specter or Toomey in this election. You should want to pay your dues like the rest of the politicos out there. Run for the State Senate! Knock on doors every night for the next 10 months in your district, and knock off a Republican in the State Senate. That would be helpful to the Democratic party. While I dislike T.J. Rooney, I know it isn't helpful to be out there beating up on the State Chairman. Do Pennsylvania and Democrats around the country a favor; look for another path to go down.
