Cronyism & Corporate Influence in Washington: Time for a Change. It's Clear.
I winced when I read a story today about how our unelected President is still pleading with the American people that because Saddam Hussein was a terrible person, that it doesn't really matter which unsubstantiated premise you discount, the war was justified. Ok, Mr. President, Saddam was a cruel leader. I'll give you that. But I think you're protesting a bit too much about WMD (to badly paraphrase Shakespeare). What I want to know is what happened in Cheney's energy meetings in early 2001. Was Halliburton there? Bechtel? Other beneficiaries of the war? Did they discuss invading Iraq as part of the energy policy? Democracy demands transparency. Whether it's backroom deals between career politicians in our own party about who will run for one seat or another and who will graciously accept some other seat, bowing to the whims of those in power instead of the will of the people, or back-room deals in Washington that send our troops into harms way and some back in body bags: the lack of transparency undermines democracy. Transparency should be law. It's likely we'll never know what happened in Dick Cheney's closed-door Energy meeting back in early 2001, and whether or not they discussed invading Iraq as part of the administration's oil-centric energy policy, and who was in that meeting, and who is benefitting now from the decisions made there. We can only guess. Democracy should not be about guessing, though. Transparency must be required for democracy in this country to truly thrive. Throw the cronies out. Make this the year we replace career politicians, we reject back-room politics for the few at the expense of the many, and we reclaim our democracy by rising up and taking a stand for ourselves, our families, and our democracy. You can change the world--I believe in you.
