Weekend Journal: DuBois
We started early yesterday at the Chamber of Commerce in DuBois, attending a breakfast featuring the local county commissioner candidates. One of them pointed to NAFTA as the cause of the poor business climate in the areas, where unemployment is at a painful 10%. Someone noted aloud how negative he was, and asked if he had anything positive to say. I jumped in on our way out the door saying he was right—NAFTA, China, Free Trade are hurting us, but there IS something we all can do. We all have voices and should use them to pressure Harrisburg to stand up for them in Washington. It’s time Harrisburg gets together and makes the case for Fair Trade on behalf of this state! We’re losing over 200 manufacturing jobs a day because of greed and stupid policies of the Free Traders. Next, we visited the high school, where we met with a few classes of great students who are very concerned about paying for college. I told them about my idea for Debt Relief for Students, where a 5-year commitment to public service (working on a definition) earns you a free tuition. I think if we add a GPA requirement to it then we’ve got a great program that provides both an incentive for kids to go into public service and to commit to studying hard. Anyway, they asked great questions and were very warm. And ALL of them are registered to vote! We spent the day visiting manufacturers in the area, most of which are hurting. One, however, is doing great, and it’s headed by a Republican with a big heart and a deep commitment to his community. When the music department was pretty much cut out of the budget, he bought instruments for the kids with his own money. The school board wasn’t terribly responsive and a bit rude to him, so he did what any good American would—he decided to replace them and is now running for school board. Denny, you have my endorsement! Later that evening, we were blessed with a terrific reception from a great group of people brought together by the O’Donnells. I heard the same thing as I made my way across the room—we need to do something about the economy, Arlen Specter should not be forgiven for what he did to Anita Hill, and Bush has to go. Amen! Later today we're heading to Oil City. Tomorrow we head to Washington County to meet the folks down there. The change of seasons is so beautiful in Pennsylvania.
