Hotels & Host Families

I hate staying in hotels for more than a day or so. When I was in Guatemala on a Human Rights mission with GHRC in April, we stayed at a monastery in Guatemala City. Later in the week two of us headed to Concepcion, where we stayed with a midwife and her family (my traveling companion was helping her open a clinic) and they had no running water. But the air was clear, the fields were green, and the buckets of cold and hot water in the shower did the trick. Perfectly wonderful, plus I met some great people and learned a bit of the Mayan language.

I'm in a hotel in Pittsburgh tonight, playing tic tac toe online with my friend Lynne from DU (cheating, she's asked me to tell you), too tired to write essays and too sick from my cold to fall asleep. I hate the air in hotels. I need windows that open! I'd trade the running water for windows that open...

Happiness just wasn`t part of the job description back then. You tried to find a helpmate to keep the cold wind and dogs at bay. Happiness just wasn`t part of the equation. Survival was.
