Remembering Senator Wellstone
I credit two political figures for my interest in politics (my father, my mother and my brother are the three most important people in my life who guided me into politics); Michael Dukakis, who gave me my first taste of a campaign (my brother and I did lit drops for him in our hometown of DuBois) and Paul David Wellstone, who showed me that little guy can win and should step up and fight and showed me that you can have a heart in politics, even when it seems like everyone is a crook. I hope that I can encourage you to share your memories of the late senator, professor and national wrestling champion. Tonight, I will be attending a folk concert in his honor in Harrisburg. I took a minute to read the article, and found myself dialing the then president of the Villanova Democrats, who, pathetically, had no idea who the Senator was. I then called my mom, who I knew wouldn't know him, but would at least listen. I called the Chairman of the Democratic Party, Bruce Beardsley, another Democrat Steve Shenk, and others. There wasn't much else I could do, but I turned my dorm-room door into a mini-memorial to Paul Wellstone. This was one of the few posters, etc. that I put up for public display that wasn't burned by my dorm-mates in a radically, right-win school. In democracy, I was in New York working with a client. My sister called me from Colorado; she had lived in Minnesota and is involved in progressive politics. She was 8 months pregnant at the time and completely inconsolable--I was scared she would go into labor. Wellstone touched many lives, including mine through his books. I am running on what I believe in; Wellstone is my inspiration for that. I visited Wellstone's office, and I left a note for him (he unfortunately was out at lunch), asking him to keep on fighting for what was right. I got a reply a few weeks later from him, thanking me for visiting, and telling me to stay involved. Mr. Crystle, where were you when Wellstone died? Nobody told me at school, so I was shocked and saddened when my mom told me when I got home. As a Jewish liberal, Paul Wellstone was a role model for me. He believed strongly in "Tikkum Olam"-the betterment of the world. In fact, I had recently finished reading his 2001 autobiography, "The Conscience of a Liberal". He is an inspiration to us all, a leader for his time, and one of the greatest, most honest men the Senate has ever had. Rest in Peace, Senator Wellstone. One year ago today I showed up to a deli in Washington, DC in a rush as usual, I ordered my sandwich and walked over to the counter to grab a bag of chips and pay for my lunch. I looked over the counter at the television that was reporting that a plane had crashed that was carrying Senator Paul Wellstone, Shelia Wellstone, Marcia Markuson Wellstone, and campaign aids Mary McEvoy, Tom Lapic, and Will McLaughlin. Instead of rushing back to work I stood and watched with several others, who I had seen everyday in this luncheonette but had never taken the time to get to know, and hoped and prayed for the best. I couldn't even hear my cell phone ring in my pocket, it was my office calling asking me where I was, I was never gone for more than 20 minutes for lunch. My co-workers knew what an admirer of Paul Wellstone's I was, they eventually realized that I would not be back anytime soon as the news filtered through to them.
