First Universal Health Care Organizing Meeting in Pittsburgh...
...we held it yesterday in Pittsburgh--went fairly well. Over 60 people showed up, including the press: Local group forms to push for national health care Every American deserves access to the best health care available. I think we can get this rolling statewide--there is such deep interest and demand for a solution to the health care crisis. We agreed to support Congressman John Conyers' bill HR 676. I'm a little concerned about the bill because it requires each state to set up its own enrollment program and issue health care cards, like social security cards. Which means we create 50 new, non-integrated bureaucracies aross the country. I'm calling Conyers' office tomorrow to address that. It seems as though it's in there to appease the "states' rights" folks, but there's no practical reason I can see to have redundant administration of the system. Otherwise, the bill's really quite solid. The next meeting is at 12 noon February 7th in Pittsburgh at the Steelworkers building in downtown Pittsburgh. In the meantime, I'm working on getting first meetings rolling in Erie, Harrisburg, State College, Bloomsburg, Scranton/WB, East Stroudsburg, Allentown, and Philly. In March, we're holding the first national meeting--please let me know if you are interested in helping!

The more irritated he becomes at modern art the more he betrays the fact that he himself, and his civilization, are implicated in what the artist shows him.
