Manufacturing Czar Pick Panned
Tony Raimondo, an industrialist from the midwest state of Nebraska, withdrew his candidacy for Assistant Commerce Secretary for the Manufacturing and Services Sector "due to Nebraska political issues," a source close to the White House said. Tony, Tony, Tony. Tony has outsourced about 200 jobs to China, even building his own factory there. That's very enterprising of Tony, and consistent with the Commerce Department's view of the world. This is the same Commerce Department that offers seminars on how to move your business to China. And this is the same administration that says it's a good thing for the economy when you lose your job to offshoring. Well, I hate to quote an old trickle down war horse like Ronny, but it's a recession when your neighbor loses his job, it's a depression when you lose your job, and it's a recovery when George (all hat and no cowboy) Bush loses his job. Folks, there is no natural end in sight to offshoring. We must act now to prevent the complete collapse of our futures. Some folks inside of PA government are doing just that by introducing bills that get the state government off the insourcing crack. We're still not sure where Rendell sits on this--though I can tell you I know his administration is split on the issue (Ed, this is the sort of thing that defines a governor's legacy--don't end up on the wrong side of this story). But we need national action. The first action we must take is to get George Bush out of office. Follow that with getting his crony friends our of office too, like Hastert, Specter, and Frist. Then we need to develop a long-term economic plan for the country that includes investing in our own progress, protecting our futures from the threat of chasing the cheapest price, and establishing some fundamental, principles-based standards to inform our trade agreements.
