Governor's Summit on Manufacturing
I was one of 150 or so invited guests of the Governor to talk about manufacturing. I mention invited because I was surprised but happy to get the invite and have the chance to talk a little about what's happening to PA manufacturers. While the Summit was long on speeches and short on breakout sessions, I think it was a good first step and it seems the State is truly interested in learning about how to help manufacturing. The top three suggestions: Improve education--grads are not ready for many jobs in the manufacturing sector, forcing manufacturers to look elsewhere or to train workers. Do something about healthcare--well, yes, of course. It's time to go to a single-payer system, though that was not brought up. Lobby Washington to do something about the egregious problems in our trade policies and complete lack of action on behalf of American business. I was impressed by the Governor's interest in the issues and ability to learn on his feet. I was less impressed by the Deloitte & Touche economist, who had a lame response to my point about the myth of productivity. The good news is the Governor will create a post for a Trade advocate, try to reduce barriers to doing business in the State, create new sources of capital, and address the education issues.
