Specter by 2 points
I can't believe I forgot to post my call on this, but believe it or not I had Specter by 2 points and Toomey winning Lancaster County. Argh! So let's talk about the race I dropped out of for a second. Hoeffel is counting on the "bloodied Specter" view of reality, that Specter will be tired and hurt and vulnerable. I like Joe, and I'm supporting him given his continued support on the offshoring/insourcing issue. But I think this version of reality is embraced only by his rather optimistic staff and supporters. The reality is most November voters don't know about what just happened, and Specter has about 6 months to clean up his act, sound more moderate, and appeal to the conservative working class Democrats our party has long forgotten how to woo. Joe, it's going to be a tough, long road, and I think if you're going to get any traction, you need to drop the "snarlin Arlen" routine, really take off the gloves and hammer him every day on issues that matter to people. Remember, people don't know what they like, the like what they know, and they don't know you, Joe. That's the downside of having your primary opposition drop out. The other downside or Specter winning is money: it ain't forthcoming from around the country. The DSCC will concede the PA election and major donors nationwide will likely not throw their suport your way, choosing a "closer" election somewhere else. You'll have to convince them early and often that you can beat Specter, and very few people believe that. But you're the man, so we've got your back. So Greens, are you running anyone? The good thing is that we won't have Son of Santorum. The bad news is people are likely to vote to keep things the same, and Specter is headed for the Judiciary chair... Posted by: Charlie at April 28, 2004 04:39 PMOur congressional system rewards seniority with great powers. It isn't right, but it is a fact. There are many voters, both Repub and Dem, who realize that Arlen Specter's 24 years of seniority in the Senate gives him great influence for PA. Hoeffel will have a great deal of trouble overcoming a moderate, pro-choice repub with that kind of clout for PA. That being said, a Toomey victory yesterday probably would have meant sure victory for Hoeffel in Nov. Therefore, I sit here today not knowing whether to be happy or sad because although I love seeing Toomey go down, it probably is not the best thing for the Democrats!
