Memorial Day
Many people have died fighting for this country in a long list of wars. Most of them were soldiers. But some were protesters who dared raise their voices to the sometimes wayward stewards of our democracy, dying for the cause of justice at the very hands of those empowered to protect it, but instead threaten it. The courage, conviction, and contribution of these protesters is rarely acknowledged. This Memorial Day, while honoring those in uniform who served their countries in war, please also take a moment to acknowledge those who have died while fighting for labor rights, civil rights, human rights, and any of the principles and freedoms of our democracy, so often trampled by the powerful, who seemingly forget the source of their power. They remind us that we have accomplished much without the use of military force and they deserve our thanks.
