Rumsfeld & The Geneva Convention

Donald Rumsfeld, continuing his shaky relationship with the truth, now asserts that his policy of keeping a "secret" prisoner was not also a policy to keep the Red Cross from knowing, and didn't violate the Geneva Convention. The prisoner was not given an ID number, was held in secrecy for over half a year, and was hidden from the Red Cross--all in direct violation of the Geneva Convention.

The Geneva Convention is important, Donald, because sometimes other countries capture and detain our soldiers. And of less interest to you, but no less important, the Geneva Convention provides a framework for the humane treatment of people, drawing a line in the sand between humane and inhumane treatment, and between humanity and brutality. Because of your wanton disrespect for the US and International law, our own soldiers are now in danger of terrible mistreatment when captured. John McCain can attest to that.

Then there's the issue of your top-down authorized interrogation techniques, otherwise known (among us weak and sensitive liberals) as "torture". Nice. Donald, it was time to step down a few weeks ago, and it's still time to step down. You are bad for America, bad for our armed forces, and bad for human rights--which, by the way, are American rights, just so there's no confusion about it. You--like the other neo-cons who cynically and knowingly undermine the US democracy (Rove, Wolfy, Cheney, Ashcroft)--are not a good American.

And you're no longer welcome here. This isn't a matter of a mere difference in opinion. It's about behavior, and we will not tolerate the way you've acted on behalf of our country. And just to show there are no hard feelings, I'll write your resignation letter for you and get you a pair of one-way tickets to someplace more to your liking, to some banana republic where this kind of behavior is tolerated. Iraq, perhaps.
