Sudan, Iraq, and Bush
Before invading Iraq last year, Bush consistently made the case that the mission was, among other things, based on his desire to rid us of a terrible dictator who gassed people and consistently violated Human Rights. That part of his argument was true, and while other parts were not, Human Rights are an important set of principles this country should permanently integrate into its domestic and foreign policies. Not that Bush believed what he was saying; the administration clearly has itself violated the human rights of at least over 10,000 people, including Iraqis and Americans. Sudan "...wide scale burning of villages and is consistent with earlier reports that the Janjawid, armed and backed by the government of Sudan have been engaged in a wide spread and systematic campaign of killing civilians, raping women and girls, abductions and displacement of certain communities." The Sudanese government, horrifyingly, is behind the armed groups engaging in the attacks. These domestic, state-sponsored terrorists target the people of Darfur exclusively, burning their villages and destroying their crops. UN experts project that within 2 months 1% of the affected population per day will die. That's between 10,000 and 20,000 people. Per day. In a twist, rebel groups--not the state-sponsored thugs--are demanding UN intervention in Darfur. George Bush, it's time to act on behalf of this country for the right reasons. Stand up, do what's right. Not because you have an election coming up, but because over 1 million Sudanese may never live to hear the results of it.
