Hoeffel Race: Go To the Air
Politics. Not the nicest thing in the world. And not the most fair. I blasted the Philadelphia AFL-CIO in the last post. My immediate reaction--well, let's just say your first reaction is usually the clearest. Since then I've been thinking about why the group of unions would endorse Specter, and I understand. I disagree with them, I think they're wrong, and I think it's still shameful, but I understand. The unions endorsed Specter because by now they have a pretty good feel for who is going to win. They've seen the Hoeffel campaign, they've seen Joe's low statewide name recognition, they feel that by July he should have stronger numbers to have a fighting chance, and they think Specter is going to win. So they are supporting him. Because what happens if they back Hoeffel and Specter wins? Politics. It's all politics. Not the good kind. The kind where politicians do things that give themselves more power, where union leaders play their cards not according to the principles they supposedly stand for, but because they give in to power. How weak. But I don't know if I can blame then. I've supported the Hoeffel campaign and continue to. But I feel they are too timid. They have a scarcity mentality when it comes to money and media buys, saving their money until the last push of the campaign. Folks, I've said it to you before, and I'll say it again because it bears repeating: people don't know what they like, they like what they know. They know Specter, they don't know Joe, and "Specter isn't that bad" to many in this state. Winning starts with name recognition. Feeling good about the "new guy" with the funny name takes time for most people. They don't like change, really. And they don't know what they'd be changing to. A website and a bus tour isn't enough. Go to the air. Now. I've said this directly to the campaign, but it's run by traditional campaigners who "know" that money is limited and you have to save until the end. They can expect about a 9% bump from their last-month push, taking them from 35/37 percent to about 44/46 percent. Newsflash--that ain't enough to win it. The campaign isn't being taken on by people at the grassroots level in my area, anyway, and we have a solid Democratic voting bloc here. Go to the air. Show some fight. The money will come back. Drop the scarcity mentality. Go to the air. Come out swinging. We'll respond. Go to the air. The running game is not enough. The gap is too wide to cross with the time you have left with a backloaded attack strategy. Go to the air. Make it a race. energize the base. We're waiting and waiting and we like Joe and want him to win. But even well-read, informed, regular dedicated voters Democrats I speak with don't know much about him and have little faith the campaign is going to take him over the top. They're talking about Santorum already. They assume Specter is a given. You have less than 4 months to make a difference. Go to the air.
